Hypocritical reasoning to support views

I have no problem with people having different political views. Having different views makes for great conversations and solutions. The problem is the hypocritical reasoning used to support views.

I was inspired growing up, hearing how people pulled together during WWII to help the country. With the pandemic taking over 640,000 American lives, it seems the part of the country is bent on destroying itself.

“Knowing how to think empowers you far beyond those who know only what to think.”

– Neil deGrasse Tyson

Personal choice versus government intervention

If you really believe that wearing a mask and getting vaccinated should be a personal choice and the government should not force medical decisions, then how can you support anti-abortion legislation? If you used the phrase “my body, my choice” at any point to support your decision to go maskless and unvaccinated, please stop voting for anti-abortion legislation.

If you are not getting the vaccine because you don’t trust the science, why would you run to the hospital when you get sick? The same doctors who believe in the science behind the vaccine are the ones treating you with the knowledge you don’t trust.

If you use the phrase “the lord is my shepherd,” do you not see the irony of using sheep as an insult? I remember being proud to be a “lamb of god” growing up. Following faith blindly = good. Following science with evidence = bad? And if you have taken livestock medication, can you really call anyone else a sheep?

Freedom of religion means freedom from religion

If you truly believe in freedom of religion, please stop forcing your religious beliefs onto others. Live your personal life by your religious doctrine. Show the world your beliefs through example. Stop trying to force me to live the lifestyle you think I should.

If gay marriage is against your religion, don’t do it. If having an abortion is against your religion, don’t get one. If lying is against your religion, stop lying. If eating cheeseburgers is against your religion, don’t eat one.

Please stop trying to make others live life by your rules. Especially, when so many trying to mandate their rules for others cannot follow them. Newt Gingrich telling anyone about the “sanctity of marriage” is laughable. Tell me again how cheating on your previous wife with your now-current wife is the proper marriage.

Ignoring the freedoms of others

If you fly a flag that says “Don’t tread on me,” it is not a pass to tread on everyone else. If you expect your boundaries to be respected, shouldn’t you be respecting the boundaries of others?

If you yelled “law & order” during the protests, but not at the insurrection, can you say you believe in either? If you support the Constitution, how did watching people try to overthrow the voting process not anger you?

If you support small government, how can you support all the restrictive laws? Just because you agree with it, it’s okay?

I know I can be a hypocrite at times. It’s a conscious effort to avoid one-sided thinking. Simply asking yourself “why?” can be a good start.
